Oral History Interview
On April 12, 2012, Darren, Dave, and Michael interviewed Chaz and Sarah Kirby in their store in Medford, New Jersey. We asked them about the history of their business, their personal experiences with eating local food, and their efforts to put together a farmers market that will open May 20, 2012. The following video is an hour long and will be edited with other interviews to produce a coherent documentary about eating locally.
Conclusion
We took a ton of information and driving points that led the majority of the research for the remainder of our collaborative research project. From the Kirby's we discovered that eating locally and sustainable is more than just stopping by a road stand every once in a blue moon and buying some tomatoes and corn from a guy in overalls that says he grew them himself. It is a community process that leads to an overall way of life that is stricter and harder to do than any of us could have thought. If we had the opportunity to interview the Kirby's again we would ask them about their specific farming practices and how they plan on dealing with the issue of accountability. We would also ask them if they are aware of any of the health and nutrition factors that come from eating locally and sustainably.
